Aussie boardmakers battle imports with new website

Boardcave connects consumers with Australian surfboard shapers

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 May, 2012 : - - Boardcave.com has been working with leading Australian surfboard manufacturers over the last six months to build an Informative Community Buying (ICB) portal to help surfers conveniently find, compare and buy the right surfboards for their requirements. Boardcave.com is on target to be released to the general public in July, launching with a team of online professionals working to expose the listed surfboard manufactures to a national and eventually global audience of surfers.

Co-founder of Boardcave.com Ryan Mets says, ”with cheap Asian imports flooding the market it’s essential we highlight the benefits of buying quality over quantity, helping surfers make informed purchase decisions”.

Mets believes, “one of the reasons surfboard manufacturing hasn’t evolved with other mass produced goods is because surfing is an individualistic sport, meaning every surfer and wave is different. Experienced surfboard shapers, similar to a doctor, have the knowledge and experience to prescribe a surfboard specifically for an individual’s requirements (weight, height, ability, fitness, wave type, etc)”.

With a wide range of new technologies and board models being released each year, Boardcave.com  will help inform surfers on what’s available on the market, helping them find the right surfboards with the help of their listed surfboard manufacturers. Boardcave.com  will act as an online marketplace for surfers to connect with and buy surfboards from Australia’s leading surfboard manufacturers.

Once registered, each manufacturer receives a virtual storefront with admin access to login and easily upload their surfboard range, providing expert product information, images and videos about performance, technology, materials, design and price. To help connect customers with their perfect surfboard, Boardcave.com has developed the Board Engine, a surfboard recommendation system developed with Australian shapers.

The Board Engine uses an algorithm to correlate the surfboard manufacturers uploaded data loading a selection of recommended surfboard models specific to the surfer’s individual requirements (height, weight, ability, wave height etc).

Co-founder Chris Greben says, “the Internet is a valuable tool for surfers, keeping them in touch with the sport of surfing, videos, the world tour, swell forecasts and much more. Surfers are growing increasingly interactive online and an informative portal like Boardcave.com can expose and connect shapers with a national and eventually global audience”.

Greben says, ”with Boardcave.com, surfers have access to a wealth of knowledge uploaded by the shapers, with the ability to browse through their virtual storefronts to compare and customise their surfboard order, having it delivered to their door”.
