Created in 1964 in Biarritz, the French Surf Federation has its headquarters in Hossegor (40). It is chaired since 2005 by Jean-Luc Arassus, and managed by a board of 14 elected members. The FFS received the delegation of power from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Associative Life, in order to organize, develop and regulate (in metropolitan France as well as overseas) the practice of surf-riding and its associated disciplines. The FFS gathers 80.000 members (18.000 federal licenses and 62.000 leisure licenses), distributed in about 200 clubs in France and overseas. One third of the FFS members are women.
The FFS has 150 structures labeled "French Surf School". It organizes the French surfing championships since 1965.
