Les Sourires du Ghana: Last days before the big departure of an eco-solidarity mission
RIDE FOR GOOD: EUROSIMA SUPPORTS "LES SOURIRES DU GHANA", A WOMEN'S, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOLIDARITY PROJECT
EuroSIMA Ride For Good highlights " The Smiles of Ghanaa women's, environmental and solidarity project selected by Oxbow through its call for projects " Be The Change! ". This initiative, led by Mélie and Victoria, aims to raise awareness of textile pollution and promote social inclusion in Ghana, while sharing the common values of board sports and sustainable commitment.
GHANA'S ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE
Ghana, one of the world's largest importers of second-hand clothing, receives over 150 tonnes of textiles every day. While some is repaired, resold or recycled, around half ends up in open dumps or on beaches, causing serious environmental pollution. Mélie, who works for a circular economy consultancy, and Victoria, an artistic director in a major textile group, have decided to take action to raise awareness of this issue and propose concrete solutions.
FROM ACCRA TO BUSUA
" Our mission will start in Accra, the capital, where we'll be meeting with NGOs such as The Revival to conduct beach clean-ups and upcycling workshops.upcyclingcreating new products from textile waste.
Our adventure will then take us to Busuaa fishing village also renowned for its board sports. We're going to meet with the local surf club to organize environmental actions. On site, one of the problems to be highlighted is the no access So we're going to buy water filters and provide them with water bottles to reduce the use of single-use plastic water glasses that pollute the village's beaches. The aim of "Les Sourires du Ghana" is not only to provide tangible help to the Ghanaian population, but also to raise awareness of the impact of fast fashion and the way in which our European consumer habits influence distant countries.
