PARIS2024: Audience success for surfing

Record audience ratings for surfing events!

 

On the night of Monday August 5 to Tuesday August 6, surfers Johanne Defay and Kauli Vaast won the first Olympic medals in the history of French surfing. Winning bronze and gold respectively, the two athletes tamed the mythical Teahupo'o wave in Tahiti, French Polynesia.

For its second entry as an Olympic event, after Tokyo 2021, surfing was a huge hit with viewers on France 3, Polynésie La1ère and all the channels of the Réseau des1ère.

 

12.8% audience share

France 3 increased its audience share in the 23.00 to 04.30 a.m. slot (Nuit du surf) devoted to the competition, despite the late hour and time difference. The women's and men's finals, from Monday August 5 at 23.00 (Paris time) to Tuesday August 6 at 04.30 (Paris time), were watched by 357,000 viewers, representing 12.8% audience share - higher than the channel's standards.

 

13 million viewers for surfing events

A total of 13 million viewers have watched the surfing events since the start of the Olympic Games on France 3. Daytime repeats on France 2, France 3 and France 5 reached 6.6 million viewers. With over 60 hours of coverage, surfing was watched by 19.3 million viewers across all channels and time slots.

 

Polynésie La1ère 's website and social networks have grown significantly: 

  • 162,000 visits, 304,300 page views and 73,700 video views, including 65,644 just for live TV on the Polynésie La1ère website on August 5 and 6. Articles on the final day of the competition generated more than 112,460 page views.
  •  5.2 million video views for excerpts published on Polynésie La1ère 's Instagram and Facebook accounts since July 24.    
  • On Facebook, videos posted about surfing exceed 200,000 views, with 193,000 views for Polynesian surfer Kauli Vaast's wave and 288,000 views for Brazilian Gabriel Medina.
